How to Prepare Cacao at Home

How to Prepare Cacao at Home

When I'm not guiding cacao ceremonies, my personal practice at home is often about ease, intuition, and listening to what my body needs. Cacaopura was born from a desire to make ceremonial cacao an effortless, deeply nourishing daily ritual, and preparing it should feel just as natural and joyful.

For me, many mornings begin with a cup designed to detoxify and offer anti-inflammatory support. I warm up my oat milk (sometimes a touch of agave for sweetness, sometimes not), and then the magic of spices begins. My go-to trio for well-being is cinnamon, a pinch of cayenne pepper for warmth, and a whisper of turmeric for its anti-inflammatory qualities.

I invite you to make the ritual truly yours! The beauty is in experimentation - play with various spices and flavourings that speak to you on any given day. Discover what feels joyful and delicious, what creates a taste that truly sings to your soul.

Crafting Your Cacaopura Moment

Our ceremonial cacao comes pressed into small, easy-to-melt coins, freeing you from the need for chopping blocks. This makes your daily ritual truly effortless and efficient. Since every coin is naturally unique, weighing anywhere from 3 to 5 grams, preparing your cup becomes an intuitive practice:

  1. Warm your liquid: Start with the equivalent of a generous cup of your favourite plant-based or cow's milk.

Remember: Keep it warm and steamy but never boiling. Temperatures over 70°C-80°C can damage cacao’s delicate nutrients, mood-lifting compounds and negatively impact its structure. If you’ve accidentally overboiled the liquid, set it aside and let it cool before adding cacao.

  1. Add your Cacaopura coins: For daily use, I usually recommend between 5 to 7 coins. If you prefer a stronger taste and experience closer to the ceremonial cacao, you might add a few more. For a lighter, softer sip, fewer coins will do. Trust your intuition, test various quantities; Mother Cacao will guide you.

  1. For cacao experience with a twist: If your body is craving something more, add honey for some sweetness. For those moments when you crave something more indulgent, try a hint of lemon zest and a dash of maple for a 'lemon drizzle' feel, or perhaps a 'fire orange' with fresh orange peel and ginger. A touch of sea salt can even evoke a 'salted caramel' delight, there are many possibilities, let us know which one is your favourite!

  1. Stir gently: Using metal or wooden whisk, stir until your cacao has fully melted into the milk and you cannot see any lumps. Watch it transform into a smooth, delicious elixir.

  1. Optional: For an extra luxurious texture, use a handheld or electric milk frother to create a beautiful creamy texture (personally, I tend to avoid it as in my experience it can turn very messy, some of my friends enjoy it very much).

Some days, less time spent on preparing cacao equals more time to enjoy it - if you're truly pressed for time, simply add your cacao coins and liquid directly into an electric milk frother and use the heat-up setting – it will dissolve beautifully and deliver a creamy, luxurious experience in no time.

Every cup of Cacaopura is a gentle invitation to pause, connect, and return to yourself.

Once your cacao is ready, pour it into your favourite cup, breathe in the beautiful aroma and take your time sipping it slowly.

Let this daily ritual be your source of presence and pleasure.
